Biography
Bülent Şarlioğlu, (Fellow, IEEE) received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Istanbul Technical University, İstanbul, Turkey, in 1990, the master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA, in 1992, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA, in 1999.
Since 2011, he has been a Professor with the University of Wisconsin at Madison and the Associate Director of the Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium. From 2000 to 2011, he was with Honeywell International Inc.’s Aerospace Division, Torrance, CA, USA, most recently as a Staff Systems Engineer. He is the inventor or the co-inventor of 20 U.S. patents and many international patents.
He has more than 200 technical papers that are published in conference proceedings and journals. His research interests include electrical machines, drives, and power electronics.
Dr. Sarlioglu was elected as a 2021 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He was the recipient of the Honeywell’s Outstanding Engineer Award in 2011, NSF CAREER Award in 2016, 4th Grand Nagamori Award from Nagamori Foundation, Japan in 2018, and IEEE PES Cyril Veinott.(Based on document published on 21 April 2023).
Bülent Şarlioğlu’s research encompasses a wide range of topics in electrical engineering. His work focuses on inverters, finite element analysis, and permanent magnet machines, including components like rotors, stators, and permanent magnet motors. He investigates cooling methods, motor drives, and synchronous machines, along with machine control and wide band gap semiconductors. His research also covers computational fluid dynamics, switching converters, and electromagnetic interference. Additionally, he studies magnetic flux, aerodynamics, aerospace propulsion, compressors, electric machines, fault diagnosis and tolerance, heat transfer, power electronics, silicon compounds, and torque.

Re-emergence of Current Source Inverters using Wide Bandgap Devices and Comparison with Voltage Source Inverters

ABSTRACT:
Wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices are about to have a significant impact on future machine drives. In this lecture, Dr. Sarlioglu will present the most recent research results for current source inverters (CSI) and compare the CSI with voltage source inverter. Current source inverters feature interesting characteristics, i.e., almost sinusoidal output voltage, reduced EMI/EMC and bearing current issue, no-dc link capacitor, high-temperature capability. With the high switching capability of WBG devices, the dc-link inductor of the CSI can be significantly reduced and opens the door for competition with VSI. In the second part of his talk, Dr. Sarlioglu will present high efficiency and high power density integrated motor drive concepts using wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices. Integrated motor drives have various benefits, including eliminating cable between the motor and power electronics, reducing the EMI/EMC emissions, and potential joint cooling of the motor and power electronics. The lecture will include practical challenges associated with designing WBG-based inverters and conclude with a discussion of current and future applications of WBG-based motor drives.
